During a hike in the mountains surrounding Asheville, I was pushing my normal limits of low-light shooting, trying to eeke out a few more shots before the light was gone. It turned out to be a happy accident. I noticed one of the shots I took was blurred beyond recognition, but had a stylistic quality that I found interesting. So, I kept shooting, purposefully moving the camera wtih different gestures to see what sort of images it would produce.
I found the exercise to be enjoyable, allowing me to be playful and loose. I began looking at the landscape a bit differently too. Patterns, colors, contrast and proximity all began to shift from how I normally view them. And the photographs that resulted proved evocative. Instead of focusing on literal representation, I sought expressions of motion, color and mood that transcended the subject itself.
